ABS/ESP warning light: meaning and what to do
My Auto Check-up

The ABS and ESP (or ASC, DSC depending on brand) lights relate to antilock braking and stability control. When they come on, the cause should be understood so you are not driving without these safety aids. Here is the meaning and what to do.

What ABS and ESP do

ABS prevents wheel lock-up under braking and helps keep steering control. ESP (Electronic Stability Program) limits skids by braking one or more wheels and sometimes reducing engine power. When a fault is detected, the light comes on and the system may be disabled: you can still drive but without these aids.

Light on at start-up then off

At start-up, all lights come on briefly (self-test). If the ABS/ESP light goes out after a few seconds, the system is working. No action needed.

Light stays on

A fault has been stored. Common causes: wheel sensor (ABS) faulty or dirty, cable damaged, tone ring (reluctor) damaged, control unit fault. A fault code read at diagnostic can identify the wheel or component.

What to do

Driving with the light on means ABS and ESP may not work: increase following distance and avoid sudden manoeuvres. Have the vehicle checked at a garage (code read, sensor and cable checks).

Order of magnitude for costs

Wheel sensor replacement: about €80–200 (part and labour). Control unit: much more (€500–1,500 and more). My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by listing symptoms for an initial estimate.
