Brakes grinding: wear or something else?

Grinding when braking is common and can have several causes, from harmless (new pads bedding in) to advanced wear. Here is how to interpret the noise and when to have the brakes checked.
"Normal" grinding when first moving
After a damp night or rain, discs can develop a thin layer of rust. The first few brakes then produce a brief grind that disappears after a few applications. No action needed.
Pad wear indicator
Many pads have a metal tab (or sensor) that contacts the disc when thickness is low. Grinding then becomes persistent when braking: that is a wear signal; have the pads (and possibly discs) replaced soon.
Other causes
Worn, warped or scored discs can grind. Dust or foreign object between pad and disc. Poor-quality or hardened pads (overheating). Grinding that increases over time or is accompanied by vibration or a spongy pedal should lead to a quick check.
What to do
If grinding is persistent or new, have the brakes checked (pad thickness, disc condition, fluid level). Do not wait: badly worn pads damage discs and increase stopping distance.
Order of magnitude for costs
Front pad replacement: €80–200. Front pads + discs: €200–450. Rear often similar or less. My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by gathering useful information for an initial estimate.
