Car battery: lifespan and signs of weakness
My Auto Check-up

The battery supplies energy for starting and powers electrical equipment when the engine is off. A weak battery shows mainly as hard starting, especially when cold. Here are typical lifespan, signs of weakness and when to replace.

Typical lifespan

A 12 V lead-acid battery (standard or AGM) lasts on average 4–6 years, sometimes less in urban use (short trips, many starts) or more if the vehicle is driven regularly and the alternator charges correctly. EFB or AGM batteries (start & stop vehicles) are more robust but more expensive. Temperature matters: cold reduces capacity and worsens starting; heat speeds ageing.

Signs of weakness

Slow cranking: engine turns for several seconds before firing, or several attempts needed. Battery warning light on the dashboard (usually red): charging problem (alternator, belt) or end-of-life battery. Lights dimming at idle or when stationary. Unreliable starting after a period unused (holiday, weekend). A load test (open-circuit voltage, load test at garage) can confirm battery condition.

When to replace

At the first signs of weakness when cold, test the battery. If voltage drops too much under load or age is over 5–6 years, replacement avoids a breakdown. If the battery light is on, check alternator and belt first: a new battery will not fix a charging fault.

Order of magnitude for costs

Standard 12 V battery: about €80–150 (fitted). AGM/EFB (start & stop): €150–300 and more depending on vehicle. Old battery take-back is often included. My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by gathering useful information (model, symptoms) for an initial cost estimate.
