Clutch: signs of wear and lifespan

The clutch transmits engine power to the gearbox. With use, the disc and mechanism wear. Here are the signs of wear and typical lifespan.
Signs of wear
Slipping: when accelerating, revs rise without speed increasing proportionally (especially on hills or under hard acceleration). Bite point moving higher: the clutch pedal engages higher and higher. Burning smell after a hill start or jerky driving. Vibration or judder when engaging. Difficulty changing gear or crunching: can be clutch or gearbox.
Typical lifespan
A clutch lasts on average 150,000–200,000 km, sometimes less in town (many starts and gear changes) or with sporty driving. Towing or overloading wears the disc faster.
What to do
At the first signs of slipping, reduce load (avoid hard acceleration, long hill starts) and plan replacement. A clutch that slips for a long time can damage the flywheel (especially dual-mass), which increases the bill.
Replacement
Replacement usually includes the disc, pressure plate (and often release bearing). The gearbox has to be removed: significant labour.
Order of magnitude for costs
Clutch kit (disc + pressure plate + release bearing): €300–700 (parts). Labour: €400–800 and more depending on vehicle. Dual-mass flywheel as well: €500–1,500. Total often €800–2,000 and more. My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by describing symptoms for an initial estimate.
