Cracked windscreen: repair or replacement

A crack or chip on the windscreen can be repaired (resin injection) or may require replacement. Depending on size, position and how the crack develops, the garage or specialist will recommend the most suitable option.
When to repair
Repair (injecting resin into the crack or chip) is possible for small chips (often under 2 cm in diameter or a short, non-spreading crack). It stops the crack from spreading with temperature changes or vibration. It is usually quick (about 30 minutes) and cheaper than replacement. Some insurers cover repair with no excess (glass breakage): check your policy.
When to replace
Replacement is needed if the crack is too long (often over 30–40 cm depending on guidelines), if it is in the driver’s line of sight and not repairable, or if the windscreen has multiple chips or is distorted. Replacement includes removing the old windscreen, fitting the new one and often recalibrating sensors (rain, light, camera) if the vehicle is equipped.
Costs and insurance
Repair: about €50–150 (often no excess if glass breakage cover). Replacement: about €200–600 and more depending on vehicle (standard or “connected” windscreen, sensors). Check whether your glass breakage cover includes windscreen, rear window and sometimes sunroof; some offer repair with no excess to limit claims.
