Eco driving: simple steps to use less fuel

Eco driving helps cut fuel consumption and vehicle wear without changing your car. A few simple habits, applied every day, give measurable results.
Anticipate and drive smoothly
Avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration: ease off in advance when traffic slows, keep a steady speed on main roads and motorways. Use engine braking instead of the brake pedal when possible. Less jerky driving means less fuel and less wear on brakes and tyres.
Engine revs and gears
Change up early (around 2,000 rpm on petrol, 1,800 on diesel) and avoid revving gears needlessly. On the motorway, a slightly lower speed (e.g. 110–120 km/h instead of 130) noticeably reduces consumption. Use the highest gear possible as soon as traffic allows.
Tyres and load
Check tyre pressure regularly (under-inflation increases rolling resistance and consumption). Lighten the vehicle: remove roof box, bars or bike rack when not in use. Air conditioning: use sparingly in town; on the open road it often uses less than an open window at high speed.
Maintenance
A dirty air filter, worn spark plugs (petrol) or a clogged particulate filter (diesel) increase consumption. Follow recommended oil change and service intervals. My Auto Check-up helps you track symptoms and estimate maintenance costs.
