Electric and hybrid vehicles: specific maintenance
My Auto Check-up

Electric and hybrid vehicles have partly different maintenance needs from conventional cars. Fewer moving parts in the motor, but battery, electronics and braking need particular attention. Here is what changes.

Motor and transmission

An electric motor has little wear (no conventional clutch on many models, no timing belt). Services are often less frequent (every 2 years or 30,000 km depending on manufacturer). Fluids (battery/motor coolant, gearbox oil) must still be checked and replaced as recommended.

Traction battery

The high-voltage battery is warranted for several years (often 8 years or 160,000 km for minimum capacity). To limit degradation: avoid 100 % charges for daily use if the manufacturer recommends it, limit rapid charging, avoid leaving the battery flat or full in extreme heat or cold. A State of Health check may be offered in the network.

Braking

Electric and hybrid vehicles use regenerative braking (energy recovery) a lot, so mechanical brakes are used less. Pads can last longer, but discs can rust if mechanical brakes are rarely used. Occasional "normal" braking and brake checks at each service are recommended.

Tyres and air conditioning

Tyres: electric vehicles are often heavier; wear can be faster. Air conditioning: it often cools the battery; a healthy system matters. Cabin filter and A/C recharge as on a conventional car.

Order of magnitude

Services in the network are often cheaper than for a conventional car (fewer parts), but repairs (battery, electronics) can be very expensive. My Auto Check-up helps you track maintenance and symptoms for your vehicle.
