Going on a road trip: checklist

Setting off on a road trip with peace of mind means doing a few checks before you leave. Here is a practical checklist to limit surprises on the road.
Fluid levels
Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and screen wash. A low level can cause overheating or a warning light. Consider an oil change if the next one is due during or just after the trip.
Tyres and pressure
Check tyre condition (tread depth, legal minimum 1.6 mm) and pressure (as per manufacturer plate, usually when cold). Wrong pressure wears tyres faster and can affect handling. Spare wheel or repair kit: make sure it is present and usable.
Lights and battery
Test lights (dipped, main beam, brake lights, indicators, fog lights if fitted). A battery nearing end of life may fail after a long stop or in hot weather; if it is over 4–5 years old, have it checked.
Documents and equipment
Driving licence, registration, insurance (certificate), MOT (or equivalent) up to date. Depending on country: reflective vest, warning triangle, breathalyser (required in France). First aid kit and charged phone are recommended.
