Hard starting when cold: common causes
My Auto Check-up

Hard starting when cold is a frequent complaint, especially in winter. The engine cranks for a long time before firing, or several attempts are needed. Here are the most common causes and what you can check.

Why cold makes starting harder

When cold, oil is thicker, parts expand less and combustion is less efficient. Batteries lose capacity when temperature drops. On petrol engines, spark plugs and the ignition system must provide a strong enough spark; on diesels, glow plugs heat the chamber to help ignition. A fault in any of these often results in long or unreliable cold starts.

Most common causes

Weak or end-of-life battery: capacity drops with cold and age. A load test (voltage, cranking current) at a garage or with a multimeter can check its condition. Spark plugs (petrol) or glow plugs (diesel) worn or faulty: replace according to recommendations (often 30,000–60,000 km for spark plugs, 80,000–120,000 km for glow plugs). Injection system: clogged injectors, faulty pressure regulator or mass air flow sensor can prevent correct mixture when cold. Starter: a tired starter turns slowly and can no longer crank the engine in cold weather.

What to do in practice

If starting is only difficult when cold, have the battery and spark plugs (or glow plugs) checked first. An electronic diagnostic can reveal any fault codes (injection, ignition, temperature). Avoid repeated cranking without pause: you drain the battery and can flood the plugs. A garage can test the battery, replace plugs if needed and check the injection circuit.

Order of magnitude for costs

New battery: about €80–200 (fitted). Set of spark plugs: €40–120. Glow plugs (diesel): €80–250 depending on engine. Injector cleaning: €100–300. Starter: €200–500 (parts and labour). My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by gathering useful information for an initial cost estimate.
