MOT and reform: what's changing

The MOT reform (or equivalent technical inspection reform) changes the rules and schedule for many vehicles. Here is what is changing for motorists.
Frequency
The frequency of the inspection may change depending on vehicle age and the regulations in your country. In many countries, vehicles over a certain age are subject to an inspection every 1 or 2 years; regulatory changes can adjust these intervals. Check official sources (ministry, testing body) for the date that applies to your situation.
Re-test
In case of major or dangerous defects, a re-test may be required within a given period (often 2 months or less for dangerous defects). Minor defects may not prevent a pass but should be repaired for safety. Preparing your car well (brakes, lights, levels, tyres) limits bad surprises.
Check points
The inspection covers safety: braking, steering, suspension, lighting, visibility, emissions, fluid levels. Mandatory equipment (seat belts, child seats if used) and vehicle identification are also checked. Digital defects or updated lists may be introduced depending on reforms.
Preparing your vehicle
Check fluid levels (oil, brake fluid, washer), tyres (wear, pressure), lights and indicators before the test. Fix any warning lights if possible and keep documents up to date. A well-maintained vehicle passes the inspection more smoothly.
