Oil change: when and how to do it (or have it done)

An oil change is one of the most common services. It involves draining the used engine oil and replacing it with new oil, usually changing the oil filter at the same time. Here is how often to do it and how to go about it.
How often
Frequency depends on manufacturer recommendations (service book) and oil type: mineral, semi-synthetic or synthetic. Typically: every 10,000–15,000 km or 1 year for standard synthetic oils, sometimes 20,000–30,000 km for long-life oils. In severe use (town, short trips, cold), some manufacturers recommend shorter intervals. Do not exceed the stated interval or mileage: old oil loses its properties and can damage the engine.
What type of oil
Specification (e.g. ACEA, API) and viscosity (e.g. 5W30, 0W20) must match the service book. Wrong oil can harm performance and engine life. If in doubt, a garage or manufacturer site can confirm the correct grade.
DIY or garage
You can do the oil change yourself if you have the kit (jack, axle stands, drain tray, filter wrench) and clear access to the sump plug and oil filter. Follow safety (vehicle stable, engine cold or warm) and never dispose of used oil in the environment: take it to a recycling centre or garage. Otherwise, have the oil change done at a garage: cost includes oil, filter and labour.
Order of magnitude for costs
Oil change (oil + filter + labour) at a garage: about €50–120 depending on vehicle and oil type. DIY: cost of oil (€30–80) and filter (€5–25). My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by gathering useful information for an initial cost estimate.
