Oil warning light on: what to do immediately

The oil warning light (red or orange) on the dashboard indicates a lubrication problem. Unlike the orange check engine light, it can signal a serious risk to the engine. Here is what to do immediately.
Red vs orange light
A red oil light (often in the shape of an oil can) usually indicates insufficient oil pressure or oil level too low. You should stop the engine as soon as possible and not drive again until the cause has been identified and corrected. Driving with insufficient oil pressure or level can seriously damage the engine (seizure, premature wear). An orange oil light (or “oil level”) often indicates low level: check the level and top up if needed before driving again.
What to do immediately (red light)
If the red light comes on: reduce engine load (no hard acceleration), stop the engine as soon as you can stop safely (roadside, lay-by). Do not restart until you have checked the oil level (dipstick) and looked for leaks (puddle under the vehicle). If the level is correct and there is no visible leak, a faulty oil pump or sensor may be the cause: have the vehicle towed to a garage.
Common causes
Level too low: leak (gasket, sump, filter not tight), excessive consumption (engine wear, turbo). Insufficient pressure: faulty oil pump, oil too thin or degraded, sump sludge. A diagnosis by a professional (level check, pressure check, leak search) is essential.
Order of magnitude for costs
Topping up oil: a few tens of euros. Head gasket or sump gasket replacement: several hundred to over €1,000. Oil pump: about €300 to €800 depending on engine.
