Petrol smell in the cabin: urgency and causes
My Auto Check-up

A petrol smell inside the cabin or around the vehicle is a warning sign: risk of fire and fume intoxication. The cause should be identified and the problem not ignored.

Immediate steps

Ventilate the cabin (open windows). Avoid any flame, cigarette or spark nearby. If the smell is strong or persistent: stop in a safe place, switch off the engine and do not restart until the vehicle has been checked. If there is a visible leak (fuel on the ground): do not drive, have the vehicle towed to a garage.

Common causes

Leak in the fuel line (hose, fitting, fuel pump), tank punctured or cracked, fuel cap faulty or loose, evaporation (charcoal canister or evaporative lines faulty), injectors or fuel rail leaking. On older vehicles, hoses under the bonnet or under the body can deteriorate and allow vapour or fuel to escape.

What to do after stopping

Do not attempt to repair a fuel leak yourself without technical knowledge. Have the vehicle checked at a garage: leak detection (circuit pressure, visual inspection), replacement of faulty hoses or fittings. A fault code (evaporation, pressure) can guide the diagnosis.

Order of magnitude for costs

Replacing a hose or fitting: about €50–200. Fuel pump: about €200–500 and more. Charcoal canister (evaporation): about €80–200. Tank: much more (€300–800 and more depending on vehicle). My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by describing symptoms for an initial estimate.
