Power steering warning light: common causes

The power steering warning light (steering wheel or rack symbol) indicates a problem with the power steering system. The steering may become very heavy or the light may come on without immediate loss of assistance. Here are common causes.

Hydraulic power steering

Low fluid level (leak at hoses, rack or pump). Accessory belt slipping or broken: pump no longer turns. Pump or rack faulty. A leak must be found and repaired; driving with too low a level damages the pump.

Electric power steering (EPS)

On electric systems (motor on column or rack), the light may come on due to assist motor fault, sensor (torque, angle) or electronics. Sometimes restarting makes the light go out temporarily (intermittent fault); a diagnostic is still needed.

What to do

Check fluid level (if hydraulic) and belt condition. Do not force the steering and have the system checked (leaks, fault codes). Heavy steering when manoeuvring increases accident risk; have it repaired as soon as possible. My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your garage visit.
