Screen wash and fluid: simple maintenance

Screen wash and fluid ensure good visibility (windscreen and headlamps if fitted). Simple maintenance limits faults and warning lights. Here are the key points.

Level and fluid

Check the level in the reservoir regularly (min/max mark under the bonnet). Top up with screen wash fluid suited to the season: winter (antifreeze, often -10 °C to -20 °C) in cold weather to avoid freezing in the jets and reservoir; summer the rest of the year. Do not use water only in winter (freezing risk) or household products (harsh on seals and paint).

Jets and spray

Jets (on bonnet or wipers) can block (deposits, scale). A pin or needle can clear the orifice; otherwise replace the jets. Check that the spray hits the windscreen (adjust as per vehicle). If the pump does not run with a full reservoir: check fuse, pump or disconnected pipe.

Wipers and warning
