Having your service done at a main dealer or an independent garage affects cost, service history and sometimes warranty. Here is what to compare.

Main dealer: pros and cons

Pros: official history (stamped book), often adds value at resale; genuine parts; manufacturer warranty preserved if the vehicle is still under warranty; software updates and recalls. Cons: prices usually higher than independents; sometimes long wait for appointments.

Independent: pros and cons

Pros: often lower prices; flexible slots; option to use equivalent quality parts (recognised brands) if the garage fits them. Cons: for vehicles under warranty, servicing outside the network may void the warranty (check the contract); some used buyers prefer a 100 % main-dealer history.

What to choose

Under warranty: follow the contract (often main dealer or approved garage). Out of warranty: a competent independent with suitable parts and detailed invoices is often a good compromise.
