Shock absorbers: wear, comfort and safety

Shock absorbers limit wheel bounce and keep contact with the road. When worn, they reduce comfort, handling and braking effectiveness. They should be replaced at recommended intervals or as soon as wear appears.
Signs of wear
Bouncing after a bump or hump (car “floats”), noise (clunking, creaking) on rough surfaces, uneven tyre wear (cupping, patches), car diving under braking or rolling in corners, visible oil leak on the shock absorber. These signs can appear gradually: do not wait to have the suspension checked.
Impact on safety
Worn shock absorbers increase braking distance (especially on wet or uneven surfaces), reduce stability in corners and directional stability on the motorway. The MOT (or equivalent) may flag a suspension fault (leak, excessive play). Replace shock absorbers in pairs (front or rear) to keep handling balanced.
When to replace them
Each manufacturer gives an indicative mileage (often 80,000–120,000 km); wear depends on road type and load. If there is a visible leak or abnormal behaviour (bouncing, noise), have them checked without delay. Rear shock absorbers often wear first on loaded vehicles or MPVs.
Order of magnitude for costs
Replacing one shock absorber (part and labour): about €80–200 depending on vehicle. Front pair or rear pair: about €200–500. Full set (four shock absorbers): about €400–1,000 and more. My Auto Check-up helps you estimate costs and prepare your visit by describing symptoms.
