Starter failure: symptoms and costs

The starter turns the engine when you turn the key. When it wears or fails, the signs are often clear. Here are common symptoms and costs to expect.

Common symptoms

Single click when turning the key, then nothing: the solenoid or motor no longer turns. No sound when turning the key: flat battery, faulty ignition or starter out of order. Grinding or whirring without the engine starting: pinion or flywheel ring damaged. Smoke or burning smell: short circuit or burnt winding. Sometimes the starter spins in vain: the pinion no longer engages the ring gear.

Common causes

Wear of the motor or brushes, solenoid stuck or faulty, flywheel ring gear worn (smooth teeth), wiring or relay faulty. A weak battery can also give the impression of a faulty starter: check first (voltage, charge).

What to do

At the first signs (repeated clicks, erratic starting), avoid forcing. Have the battery and wiring checked before concluding it is the starter. A professional can test the current draw and confirm the diagnosis.
