Turbo failure: signs and repair costs

The turbo increases power by compressing the intake air. When it wears or fails, the symptoms are often clear. Here are common signs and costs to expect.
Common signs
Noticeable loss of power, especially under acceleration: the turbo is not boosting enough. Whistling or abnormal whoosh under acceleration: air leak (hoses, manifold) or play in the turbo. Blue smoke from the exhaust: oil leak on the turbine side (seals or cartridge worn). Black smoke (over-fuelling) or rumbling: inconsistent air flow, MAF or turbo. Engine warning light on: the ECU may record faults (boost, flow, pressure).
Common causes
Wear of bearings, seals or cartridge of the turbo, variable geometry stuck or faulty (VGT turbo), insufficient oil supply or clogging (late oil change, oil quality). A hose or intercooler leak can also cause loss of power without the turbo necessarily being faulty.
What to do
At the first signs (loss of power, noise, smoke), avoid heavy load and have the intake circuit and turbo checked. Oil changes and a good oil filter limit failures. A professional can run a diagnostic (pressure, leaks, fault codes) and suggest repair (cartridge) or replacement.
Order of magnitude for costs
Turbo (reconditioned or new): €500–2,500 and more depending on vehicle. Cartridge only (if repairable): €300–1,000. Labour: €300–800. Hoses, seals, coolant (if removal): variable. Total often €800–3,000 and more. My Auto Check-up helps you describe symptoms for an initial estimate before visiting the garage.
