The orange check engine light (or engine management warning) is one of the most common indicators on the dashboard. When it comes on, many drivers worry without knowing exactly what to do. Here are the common causes and how to react.

What this light means

This warning indicates that the onboard computer has recorded one or more faults related to the engine, exhaust or ancillaries (injection, ignition, emissions). It can stay steady (orange/amber) or flash: flashing usually indicates a more urgent problem, often linked to a risk to the catalyst (misfires, overheating).

Most common causes

Recurring causes include a faulty lambda sensor (oxygen sensor), a degraded catalyst or a saturated particulate filter (DPF) on diesels. Spark plugs, ignition coils, EGR valve and mass air flow sensor are also frequent sources of fault codes. On recent vehicles, the AdBlue system (diesel) or the evaporative system (fuel cap, canister) can trigger the light without immediate impact on driving.

What to do when the light comes on

If the light is steady, moderate driving over a short distance is generally possible to reach a garage. Avoid jerky driving and hard acceleration. If the light flashes, reduce engine load (moderate speed, no full load) and have the vehicle checked quickly.

An OBD code reader or a garage visit will identify the stored fault(s). Do not ignore the light: an untreated problem can damage other components (catalyst, DPF) and increase the bill.
