When to change your tyres: wear, age, season
My Auto Check-up

Changing your tyres at the right time is essential for safety and grip. Wear, age and season are the three criteria to consider. Here is when to change them and how to check.

Wear: indicator and depth

Tread depth is the main criterion. In Europe, the legal minimum depth is 1.6 mm over the full tread width. Below that, you risk a fine and a re-test at the MOT. Tyres often have wear indicators (bars in the grooves): when the tread reaches the indicator level, replacement is required. Check wear across the full width of the tyre: uneven wear (inner or outer edge) can indicate a geometry issue (alignment, pressure).

Tyre age

Even with little use, tyres age: the rubber hardens and loses grip. Beyond about 10 years (manufacture date on the sidewall, DOT code), manufacturers and professionals recommend replacement as a precaution. Check the sidewalls regularly (cracks, cuts).

Season: summer / winter / all-season

In winter (low temperatures, snow, ice), winter tyres (or snow tyres) improve grip and reduce braking distances. In summer, summer or all-season tyres are suitable. Some regions require winter tyres at certain times. Switching between two sets (summer / winter) or choosing all-season depends on your use and budget.

Order of magnitude for costs

Tyre price varies by size and brand: about €50 to €150 per tyre (standard car). Fitting and balancing add about €15 to €30 per wheel. My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your budget by gathering useful information (model, tyre size) for an initial estimate.
