Winter tyres: obligation and good practice

Winter tyres improve grip on snow and ice and are mandatory in several countries (and regions) in winter. Here are the rules and good practice.

Obligations by country

In France, winter tyres are not mandatory nationwide; in mountain areas special equipment (snow tyres or chains) may be required by order. In Germany, Austria, Switzerland (and others), winter tyres are mandatory in winter conditions (dates or weather conditions depending on country). Check before travelling.

When to fit them

Generally fit winter tyres when temperatures stay below 7 °C (typically November to March depending on region). Above that, winter tyre rubber wears faster. Remove them when mild weather returns to preserve the rubber and effectiveness.

Advantages and limits

Advantages: better grip on snow and ice, shorter braking distance on cold surfaces. Limits: less effective on dry, warm roads; faster wear if used in summer. Storage: keep tyres (or complete wheels) away from light and moisture.
