An unpleasant smell when switching on the air conditioning (musty, stale, damp) is often caused by moisture and bacteria in the air circuit. Here are common causes and how to maintain the system.

Main causes

Condensation in the evaporator: when the A/C is switched off, moisture remains in the ducts and encourages mold and bacteria growth. Cabin air filter saturated (dust, pollen, moisture). Vents or ducts dirty. Drain tray blocked, stagnant water underneath.

Preventive maintenance

Replace the cabin air filter per the manufacturer's schedule (often every 15,000–25,000 miles or once a year). Run the A/C for a few minutes before shutting off the engine to help dry the evaporator. Avoid switching off immediately after using A/C: let the fan run on fresh air briefly. Clean the vents and check that the evaporator drain under the vehicle is not clogged.

Disinfection

If the smell persists, a disinfection of the circuit can be performed at a shop (antibacterial spray introduced via the cabin air intake). Some drivers use A/C disinfectant bombs sold at auto parts stores: follow the instructions carefully and air out the cabin afterward.

Circuit service

An A/C service (charge check, leak inspection, compressor condition) is recommended every 2 years or per the manufacturer's schedule. Low charge or a leak can reduce efficiency and promote moisture buildup in the circuit.
