Check engine light on: common causes and what to do

Ce symptôme touche votre véhicule ?
DémarrerThe check engine light (or engine management warning) is one of the most common indicators on the dashboard. When it comes on, many drivers worry without knowing exactly what to do. Here are the common causes and how to react.
What this light means
This warning means the onboard computer has recorded one or more faults related to the engine, exhaust or related systems (fuel injection, ignition, emissions). It can stay steady (orange/amber) or flash: a flashing light usually points to a more urgent problem, often a risk to the catalytic converter (misfires, overheating).
Most common causes
Recurring causes include a faulty oxygen (O2) sensor, a degraded catalytic converter, or — in cold climates, on diesel pickups — a clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF). Spark plugs, ignition coils, the EGR valve and the mass airflow sensor are also frequent sources of trouble codes. On newer vehicles, a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) issue on diesel trucks, or an EVAP system fault (gas cap, charcoal canister), can trigger the light with no immediate impact on how the vehicle drives.
What to do when the light comes on
If the light is steady, moderate driving over a short distance is generally fine to reach a shop. Avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads. If the light flashes, ease off the gas (moderate speed, no full load) and get the vehicle checked quickly.
A basic OBD-II scanner or a shop visit will pull the stored codes. Don't ignore the light: an unaddressed problem can damage other components (catalytic converter, DPF) and drive up the repair bill.
Order of magnitude for costs
Repairs vary depending on the cause: oxygen sensor replacement (about $150 to $400), EGR valve (about $250 to $650), DPF regeneration or replacement on diesel trucks (about $100 to $300 for regeneration, $1,000 to $2,500 for a new DPF). A full diagnostic (reading and clearing codes) is essential to pinpoint the exact cause.
