Maintaining a car that is rarely driven

Ce symptôme touche votre véhicule ?
DémarrerA car that is rarely driven (working from home, second car, long lay-up) faces different stresses than regular use. Some parts wear little by mileage but age or deteriorate when idle. Here is what to watch.
Battery
The battery discharges when idle (parasitic drain, alarm, electronics). After several weeks without driving, it may be too weak to start. Regular charging (battery maintainer or short run) or disconnect the negative terminal if stored long-term. If the battery is over 4–5 years old, have it checked.
Tires and fluids
Tires: rubber ages (dry rot, loss of elasticity) even without mileage wear. Check pressure before driving again. Fluids: oil level, coolant, brake fluid. Oil changes are also by time (e.g., once a year): follow the owner's manual.
Brakes and starting
Brakes: corrosion of rotors and calipers when idle, especially in damp weather. When you start again, a slight squeal may go away after a few stops; if rust is heavy, have them checked. Starting and driving at least 15–20 minutes every 2–3 weeks limits battery discharge and keeps fluids moving. My Auto Check-up helps you keep track of maintenance.
