Shock absorbers: wear, comfort and safety

Shock absorbers limit wheel bounce and keep contact with the road. When worn, they reduce comfort, handling and braking effectiveness. They should be replaced at recommended intervals or as soon as wear appears.

Signs of wear

Bouncing after a bump or speed bump (car "floats"), noise (clunking, creaking) on rough surfaces, uneven tire wear (cupping, bald patches), car diving under braking or body roll in corners, visible oil leak on the shock absorber. These signs can appear gradually — don't wait to have the suspension inspected.

Impact on safety

Worn shock absorbers increase stopping distance (especially on wet or uneven roads), reduce stability in corners and directional control on the highway. A state inspection may flag a suspension fault (leak, excessive play). Replace shock absorbers in pairs (front or rear) to keep handling balanced.

When to replace them

Each manufacturer provides an indicative mileage (often 50,000–80,000 miles); wear depends on road type and load. If there is a visible leak or abnormal behavior (bouncing, noise), have them checked without delay. Rear shock absorbers often wear first on loaded vehicles or SUVs.
