Slipping clutch: causes and solutions

Ce symptôme touche votre véhicule ?
DémarrerA slipping clutch shows as the engine RPMs rising (especially under acceleration or on hills) without the car speeding up proportionally. The drive no longer “bites” properly. Here are common causes and solutions.
Common causes
Clutch disc worn (smooth lining): most common cause. Flywheel (dual-mass or solid) damaged or worn. Pressure plate (mechanism) faulty. Oil contaminating the disc (gearbox or rear main seal leak). Aggressive driving (prolonged half-clutch, heavy loads) speeds up wear.
What to do
At the first signs (slipping on pull-away, burning smell), avoid heavy load and limit hard acceleration. Have the clutch checked (disc wear, flywheel and pressure plate condition). Repair (clutch kit: disc, pressure plate, release bearing) is usually needed; if the flywheel is dual-mass and faulty, replace it at the same time.
Order of magnitude for costs
Clutch kit (disc, pressure plate, release bearing): $400–1,200 and more depending on vehicle (parts and labor). Dual-mass flywheel: $800–2,000 and more. Total often $500–2,500 depending on vehicle and repair shop. My Auto Check-up helps you describe symptoms for an initial estimate before visiting the shop.
