Small bodywork repairs and scratches

Scratches and small dents on the body are common. Depending on depth and extent, a DIY repair or hiring a professional is possible. Here are your options.

Superficial scratches (clear coat)

Scratches that don't go through the clear coat can be reduced with polish or a touch-up kit (rubbing compound, one-step polish). Wash and dry thoroughly first. For micro-scratches (from washing), regular polishing limits the "spider web" effect.

Scratches into the paint

If the paint is damaged (white primer or bare metal visible), rust can develop on the metal. Clean, sand lightly if needed, apply primer then paint and clear coat (touch-up kits). For an invisible result, a pro (body shop) will do a spot repair or full panel respray.

Small dents

Dent with paint intact: paintless dent repair (PDR) can restore the shape without repainting. Dent with chipped paint: repaint required. Costs: PDR $100–300 depending on area; repaint $200–600 and more depending on the panel.
