Diagnostic: Engine overheating on Volkswagen - Causes and costs

Engine overheating on a Volkswagen (Golf, Polo, Tiguan, Passat, T-Roc) shows as the temperature warning light coming on or the needle in the red. TSI (turbo petrol) and TDI (diesel) engines have common overheating causes to watch.
Volkswagen: common causes
On TSI and TDI, overheating is often linked to the thermostat stuck closed, radiator clogged or blocked, water pump failure, low coolant level (leak: hoses, head gasket, expansion tank) or fan (electric or viscous) not engaging. On some models, oil cooler (DSG gearbox) or EGR cooler can also be involved.
What to do
As soon as the temperature light comes on: reduce load, turn heater on full. If temperature does not drop: stop, engine off, do not open the cap when hot. Wait for cooling before checking level. Have the system checked by a professional.
Order of magnitude for costs
- Thermostat: about €80–200.
- Water pump: about €150–400.
- Radiator: about €200–500 (part and labour).
- Head gasket: about €800–2,000 and more.
- Fill and bleed: about €50–120.
