Engine overheating on a Peugeot (208, 308, 2008, 3008, 5008) shows as the temperature warning light coming on or the needle in the red. BlueHDi (diesel) and PureTech (turbo petrol) engines share common overheating causes.

Peugeot: common causes

On BlueHDi and PureTech, overheating is often linked to the thermostat stuck closed, radiator clogged or blocked, water pump failure, low coolant level (leak: hoses, head gasket, expansion tank) or fan (electric or viscous) not engaging. On some models, oil cooler (auto gearbox) or EGR cooler can also be involved.

What to do

As soon as the temperature light comes on: reduce load, turn heater on full. If temperature does not drop: stop, engine off, do not open the cap when hot. Wait for cooling before checking level. Have the system checked by a professional.

Order of magnitude for costs

  • Thermostat: about 80 to 200 euros.
  • Water pump: about 150 to 400 euros.
  • Radiator: about 200 to 500 euros (part and labour).
  • Head gasket: about 800 to 2000 euros and more.
  • Fill and bleed: about 50 to 120 euros.
