A knocking noise on a Peugeot (208, 308, 3008, etc.) is a frequent reason for consultation. The noise often occurs in town, over speed bumps or when turning the wheel, and can come from the front or rear depending on the model.

Typical causes on Peugeot

On recent Peugeots, anti-roll bar bushes and steering ball joints are among the most common causes of a front-end knock. The anti-roll bar is fixed to the chassis by bushes that wear with mileage; play causes a sharp knock, especially on uneven roads. Steering ball joints, stressed on every turn, can also produce a knock at low speed.

On PureTech and BlueHDi versions, a knock at idle or when using the clutch can also come from the dual-mass flywheel or belts. Finally, brake pads that are poorly seated or calipers can produce a knock under braking.

Order of magnitude of costs

For a Peugeot, the following ranges give an idea of costs:

  • Anti-roll bar bushes: around €100 to €200 (parts and labour).
  • Steering ball joints: around €80 to €140 per side.
  • Dual-mass flywheel: around €700 to €1,400 depending on engine.

As with any vehicle, a detailed quote from a professional is still necessary.

Recommendations

Having the suspension and steering checked by a garage confirms the source of the noise. In the meantime, reduce speed on uneven roads and avoid unnecessary impacts. If the noise is clearly linked to braking, have the discs and pads checked.

To refine the diagnosis, note exactly when the noise appears (acceleration, braking, turning, idle) and the vehicle mileage. My Auto Check-up helps you organise this information and estimate repair costs before your garage visit.
