The DPF (particulate filter) warning light on a Peugeot diesel (208, 308, 2008, 3008, 5008 in BlueHDi) means the filter is saturated or a system component (sensor, post-combustion injection) has failed. BlueHDi engines are fitted with a DPF; mainly town or short-trip use limits automatic regeneration.

Peugeot: common causes

On BlueHDi engines, the DPF light often appears because the filter is too clogged (insufficient regeneration), the differential pressure sensor or probe has failed, or post-combustion injection (fuel to burn off soot) is not triggering correctly. Repeated short, cold trips, or incorrect AdBlue level on applicable models, can worsen the problem.

What to do when the light comes on

Follow the handbook: usually a steady-speed drive (main road or motorway, around 2,000–2,500 rpm) for 15–20 minutes to allow regeneration. If the light stays on or flashes: do not persist, have a diagnostic (fault codes, differential pressure). The garage can perform forced regeneration; if the DPF is too blocked, cleaning or replacement may be required.

Order of magnitude for costs

  • Diagnostic / forced regeneration: about €80–150.
  • Differential pressure sensor: about €150–350.
  • DPF cleaning: about €200–400.
  • DPF replacement: about €800–1,800 and more (part and labour).
