Diagnostic: DPF warning light on Citroën - Causes and costs

The DPF (particulate filter) warning light on a Citroën diesel (C3, C4, C5 Aircross, Berlingo, C4 Cactus in BlueHDi) means the filter is saturated or a fault (sensor, post-combustion injection) has been logged. BlueHDi engines share the group’s DPF technology; mainly urban or short-trip driving reduces regeneration opportunities.
Citroën: common causes
On Citroën BlueHDi engines, the DPF light usually comes on because the filter is clogged (insufficient regeneration), the differential pressure sensor or a probe has failed, or post-combustion injection is not working correctly. Short trips, cold engine and town driving encourage clogging. On some models, AdBlue (if fitted) must be topped up for the system to work properly.
What to do when the light comes on
Follow the handbook: often a steady-speed drive (main road or motorway, 2,000–2,500 rpm) for 15–20 minutes to attempt automatic regeneration. If the light stays on or flashes: have the system checked (fault codes, differential pressure). Forced regeneration at a garage is possible; if the filter is too blocked, cleaning or replacement may be needed.
Order of magnitude for costs
- Diagnostic / forced regeneration: about €80–150.
- Differential pressure sensor: about €150–350.
- DPF cleaning: about €200–400.
- DPF replacement: about €800–1,800 and more (part and labour).
