Diagnostic: Check Engine Light on Citroën - Causes and Prices

The orange check engine light on a Citroën (C3, C4, C4 Cactus, C5 Aircross, Berlingo) indicates that the ECU has recorded one or more faults. PureTech (petrol) and BlueHDi (diesel) engines share architectures similar to Peugeot; common causes of the engine warning are therefore often similar.

Citroën PureTech (turbo petrol)

On PureTech 1.2 engines, the check engine light often comes on due to the lambda sensor, catalyst or an ignition fault (spark plugs, coils). Mass air flow sensors and the evaporative system (fuel cap, canister) can also generate codes. On some models, software updates or recalls have been issued; checking the vehicle history is useful.

If the light flashes, reduce engine load and have the vehicle checked without delay to limit the risk of catalyst overheating.

Citroën BlueHDi (diesel)

On BlueHDi engines, the check engine light is frequently linked to a saturated particulate filter (DPF) or the AdBlue system (level, injector, fluid quality). Lambda sensors and a clogged EGR valve are common causes. A faulty turbo (geometry, oil leak) can trigger the warning on high-mileage vehicles.

A forced regeneration of the DPF can be attempted in the workshop; if blockage is severe, DPF cleaning or replacement may be necessary.

What to do when the light comes on

As long as the light is steady, moderate driving over a short distance is generally possible to reach a garage. Avoid jerky driving and heavy load.
