Diagnostic: Check Engine Light on Volkswagen - Causes and Prices

The orange check engine light (engine management warning) on a Volkswagen (Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc) indicates that the onboard computer has recorded one or more faults. Depending on TSI (turbo petrol) or TDI (diesel) engines, common causes and repair costs differ.

Volkswagen TSI (turbo petrol)

On TSI engines (1.0, 1.4, 1.5, 2.0), the check engine light often comes on due to the lambda sensor (before or after catalyst), the catalyst itself or an ignition fault (spark plugs, coils). Mass air flow sensors and the evaporative system (fuel cap, canister) can also generate codes. On high-mileage models, a clogged EGR valve may be involved.

If the light flashes, reduce engine load and have the vehicle checked quickly to limit the risk of catalyst damage (often linked to a misfire).

Volkswagen TDI (diesel)

On TDI engines, the check engine light is frequently linked to a saturated particulate filter (DPF) or the AdBlue system (level, injector, quality). A clogged EGR valve and faulty lambda sensors are common causes. A faulty turbo (wastegate, geometry, leak) can trigger the warning on high-mileage vehicles.

A forced regeneration of the DPF can be carried out in the workshop; if blockage is too severe, DPF cleaning or replacement will be necessary.

What to do

As long as the light is steady, it is generally possible to drive moderately to reach a garage. Avoid hard acceleration and long journeys at full load.
