Diagnostic: Check Engine Light on BMW - Causes and Costs

The orange check engine light on a BMW (1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3) indicates that the onboard computer has recorded one or more faults. Depending on petrol (B38, B48) or diesel (B47, B57) engines, common causes and costs differ.

BMW petrol (B38, B48)

On BMW turbo petrol engines, the check engine light often comes on due to a faulty lambda sensor, a degraded catalyst or a clogged EGR valve. Worn spark plugs and coils can also trigger the warning. An evaporative system fault (canister, cap) can generate codes with no direct impact on driving.

BMW diesel (B47, B57)

On BMW diesel engines, the check engine light is frequently linked to a saturated particulate filter (DPF) or the AdBlue system. Clogged lambda sensors and EGR valves also trigger the warning. A faulty turbo or wastegate may be involved on high-mileage models.

What to do
