Diagnostic: DPF warning light on BMW - Causes and costs

The DPF (particulate filter) warning light on a BMW diesel (Series 1, 3, 5, X1, X3 in B47 or B57) means the filter is saturated or a sensor has reported a fault. On B47 and B57 engines, the DPF is standard; mainly urban or short trips often prevent automatic regeneration.
BMW: common causes
On B47 and B57 engines, the DPF light usually comes on because the filter is clogged (regeneration not or barely completed), the differential pressure sensor or lambda probe has failed, or the post-combustion injection system is not working correctly. Repeated short trips without a regeneration phase (motorway or sustained driving) encourage clogging. On BlueHDi or AdBlue models, a low level can also trigger the light.
What to do when the light comes on
Follow the handbook: often a steady-speed drive (main road or motorway, around 2,000–2,500 rpm) for 15–20 minutes to attempt automatic regeneration. If the light stays on or flashes, do not push the engine; have the system checked (fault codes, differential pressure, filter condition). Forced regeneration at a garage is sometimes possible; if the filter is too blocked, cleaning or replacement may be needed.
Order of magnitude for costs
- Forced regeneration / diagnostic: about €80–150.
- Differential pressure sensor: about €150–400 (part and labour).
- DPF cleaning (decoking): about €200–450.
- DPF replacement: about €900–2,000 and more depending on model (part and labour).
