Diagnostic: Check Engine Light on Renault - Causes and Prices

The orange check engine light (engine management warning) on a Renault (Clio, Megane, Captur, Scenic) indicates that the onboard computer has recorded one or more faults. Depending on TCe (turbo petrol) or dCi (diesel) engines, common causes and repair costs differ.
Renault petrol (TCe)
On TCe engines (1.0, 1.2, 1.3), the check engine light often comes on due to a faulty lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) or a degraded catalyst. A worn spark plug or ignition coil can also trigger the warning. Mass air flow sensors and EGR valves (on equipped versions) are among other possible causes.
A evaporative system fault (fuel cap, canister) can generate codes with no direct impact on driving, but the light will stay on until the cause is fixed.
Renault diesel (dCi)
On dCi engines, the check engine light is frequently linked to a saturated particulate filter (DPF) or an AdBlue issue (level, injector, fluid quality). Lambda sensors and clogged EGR valves also trigger the warning. On high-mileage models, a faulty turbo or wastegate may be involved.
A forced DPF regeneration can be attempted by a garage; if blockage is too severe, DPF replacement or removal and cleaning will be needed.
What to do when the light comes on
Generally, you can drive at moderate speed for a short distance to reach a garage. Avoid jerky driving and hard acceleration. If the light flashes, reduce engine load immediately and have the vehicle checked: flashing often indicates a risk to the catalyst (ignition fault, overheating).
An OBD code reader or a garage visit will identify the stored fault(s). My Auto Check-up helps you prepare your visit by gathering information (model, engine, symptoms) for an initial cost estimate.
Order of magnitude for costs
- Lambda sensor: about €150–400 (parts and labour).
- Spark plugs / coils: about €80–250.
- EGR valve: about €300–700.
- DPF regeneration / AdBlue diagnostic: about €80–200.
- DPF replacement: about €800–1,800 depending on model.
- Catalyst: about €400–1,200.
An electronic diagnostic (reading codes and clearing faults after repair) is essential to confirm the exact cause and avoid unnecessary repairs.
