Naturally aspirated Ford engines

A loose or faulty gas cap and other EVAP system issues (purge valve, charcoal canister) are a very common, low-cost cause — this is one of the most frequent reasons a Ford throws a code without any noticeable drivability problem. A dirty or failing mass airflow (MAF) sensor can also trigger the light and cause rough idle or hesitation.
Ford EcoBoost (turbocharged)
On EcoBoost engines (1.5L, 2.0L, 2.7L, 3.5L, used across Escape, Explorer, Bronco and F-150), the same causes above apply, plus a few turbo-specific ones: boost/wastegate-related codes, carbon buildup on intake valves (common on direct-injection engines over time), and — on some EcoBoost engines — coolant or oil consumption issues that can trigger a warning if left unaddressed. A catalytic converter that's degraded from prolonged misfires is also more common on EcoBoost engines that have run with a bad coil or plug for a while.
If the light flashes, ease off the accelerator, avoid highway speeds, and get the vehicle to a shop as soon as possible — a flashing light usually means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter quickly.
What to do when the light comes on
If the light is steady (not flashing), it's generally safe to drive moderately to a shop. Avoid hard acceleration and towing until it's checked.
