The check engine light on a Honda (Civic, Accord, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey) means the ECU has logged one or more trouble codes. Depending on whether your engine is naturally aspirated or one of Honda's 1.5T/2.0T VTEC Turbo engines (now standard on most Civic, CR-V and Accord trims), the likely causes differ slightly.

Naturally aspirated Honda engines

On non-turbo engines (the V6 in the Pilot and Odyssey, or base four-cylinders), the check engine light most often comes on due to a failing oxygen (O2) sensor, worn spark plugs or a weak ignition coil. A loose gas cap or another EVAP system fault (purge valve, canister) is a very common, inexpensive cause. A degraded catalytic converter can also trigger the light, often after the vehicle has run for a while with a misfire.

Honda VTEC Turbo engines (1.5T / 2.0T)

On the turbocharged 1.5L and 2.0L engines used across Civic, CR-V and Accord, the causes above still apply, plus a couple specific to turbo operation: boost or wastegate-related codes, and, on some model years, oil dilution — a known issue on the 1.5T where gasoline mixes into the engine oil in cold, short-trip driving, diluting it and sometimes triggering a warning light. If your Civic or CR-V has a milky oil smell or a rising oil level, mention this to your shop specifically.

If the light flashes on any Honda, reduce speed and engine load right away — this usually indicates an active misfire and risk of catalytic converter damage.
